Hollow Plastic Shuttering Panels: A New Trendsetter in the Building Materials Industry

Plastic shuttering panels are an energy-saving and green environmental product, which is one of the future directions of the construction industry. Plastic shuttering panels use high-strength plastic containing fibers as raw material. In the molten state, it is injection-molded in one go through the injection molding process. It has advantages such as simple process, light weight, low cost, and reusability. It satisfies construction technology requirements, increases turnover rates, saves timber resources, and reduces the input of construction enterprises.

The mechanical performance of plastic shuttering panels is close to that of steel formwork and can replace steel formwork for most purposes in the construction industry. It has broad development prospects and strong versatility, and can be used for a variety of engineering projects such as bridges, railways, and commercial housing.

Comparison Between Plastic Shuttering Panels and Ordinary Steel Formworks

Strength

The tensile strength of steel is 375~460N/mm², the yield point is 220N/mm², and the elongation is 20%~26%, while the strength of high-strength plastic material is 181N/mm², which is lower than that of steel. However, the strength and bending resistance of plastic shuttering panels can be increased by increasing its thickness. In fact, the main reason for the failure of steel formwork is not its strength. By calculation, the bending strength of high-strength plastic shuttering panels with a thickness of 10mm and a specification of 300mm×1500mm is 400kN/cm², while the pressure generated by the concrete filled inside is 150~240kN.

Manufacturing Process

The steel formwork needs to go through multiple processes from cutting sheet metal: cutting, bending, deburring, punching, cutting to length, manufacturing rib boards, cutting corners, welding, correcting, painting, etc. It requires many types of machinery and equipment and numerous operators, with a per capita productivity of 5~8min/piece (piece·person). This is why steel formwork is expensive.

However, plastic shuttering panels only need one person and one machine to produce independently. It can be cooled after one injection molding process, with a productivity of about 0.5~1min per piece (min·person). In terms of manufacturing process, plastic shuttering panels are much simpler.

Cost and Price

Ordinary steel formwork generally uses Q235 steel as raw material and has to go through multiple process treatments, resulting in high costs. The price of steel formwork, with the usual specification of 300mm×1500mm, is about 42 yuan per piece. On the other hand, plastic shuttering panels use very common plastic as raw material, resulting in much lower costs. The average price of each plastic shuttering panel piece is 8~12 yuan. Using plastic shuttering panels can significantly reduce turnover material costs and lower project costs.

Thermal Expansion Coefficient

Due to the similar thermal expansion coefficients of steel and concrete, the formwork and freshly poured concrete bond firmly together and are difficult to separate. Knocking it loose with a hammer may cause damage. Plastic shuttering panels, however, have a much different thermal expansion coefficient from concrete. After pouring, as the temperature changes and the concrete sets, the plastic shuttering panels will automatically separate from the poured concrete and can be easily removed without knocking.

Additionally, because plastic has good plasticity, different shapes and sizes of formwork can be produced by changing the mold form to meet the needs of different parts of buildings and different strength requirements. Damaged formwork can be recycled by melting and re-injecting it into new formwork. The recycling performance is excellent.

Comparison Between Plastic Shuttering Panels and Bamboo-Wood Formwork

Compared with bamboo-wood formwork, plastic shuttering panels have several advantages: it has better strength; it can be molded into different shapes for easy installation, whereas wooden formwork cannot be nailed on the surface and is difficult to fix; bamboo-wood formwork uses bamboo and wood as raw materials, which are limited by environmental policies and natural growth rates and cannot meet the huge demand in industrial and residential construction.

Plastic shuttering panels have ample raw material supply and low prices, and using plastic shuttering panel can protect vast forests from being destroyed, which is beneficial to the ecological environment in the long run.

It can be seen that formwork made of high-strength plastic mixed with fibers is feasible in terms of process technology, structural performance, and cost pricing.

New Hollow Plastic Shuttering Panels

The surface of the new hollow plastic shuttering panels belongs to polymer material. The surface is flat and smooth, and the formwork joints are tight and flat. After demolding, the surface smoothness and flatness of the concrete structure exceed the technical requirements of existing clear water formwork, eliminating the need for secondary plastering, saving labor and materials.

It is light and easy to install, has strong process adaptability, is easy to demold without demolding agents, and easy to clean. It is stable and weather-resistant, with high mechanical strength. It does not shrink, swell, crack, or deform under the temperature conditions of -20℃ to +60℃, with stable dimensions. It has strong variability, and its types, shapes, and specifications can be customized according to building engineering requirements.

In summary, as a new building material, PP hollow plastic building formwork not only has a higher safety factor and more convenient usage methods than traditional formwork, but it can also save construction units' expenses, making it a new trend in the building materials industry.
